In her book „The Big Magic“, Elizabeth Gilbert shares her wisdom and unique understanding on creativity.
She puts the whole process of creativity in a beautiful perspective and reminds us again how easy it can be. She challenges us to embrace curiosity, tackle what we most love and face what we most fear.
Gilbert is a wonderful author with brilliant insides and this particular subject is very close to my heart. Creativity contributes so much to my personal happiness by simply following it and letting inspiration carry me along. Therefore, I want to share my key take away learnings form this book with you and highly recommend it to all creativity lovers.
„If you’re alive, you’re a creative person.”
I love this! Yes, we’re all creatives in so many beautifully different ways. Creativity sets you free. It lets you follow your inspiration and your heart. We all have it inside of us. So I say, let it out!
„We are all makers by design.”
„Create whatever causes a revolution in your heart.”
If it moves you, if you feel passionate about it, make sure to let it out! Yes, that might take courage, but I promise that the rewards are worth it.
„Because if you love and want something enough – whatever it is – then you don’t really mind eating the shit sandwich that comes with is.”
Oh, this is so perfect! Because there simply is nothing perfect out there. You will always have some kind of shit sandwich. May that be in regards to your dream job, your partner or your family. Find out which shit sandwich you’re willing to eat in order to get where you want to go. Then you want it enough.
From writer Rebecca Solnit:
„So many of us believe in perfection, which ruins everything else, because the perfect is not only the enemy of the good; it’s also the enemy of the realistic, the possible and the fun.”
So instead of wasting time with perfection, go out there. Nothing is perfect, nothing is well-roudend and that shouldn’t be the expectation. Be your beautiful, authentic and imperfect self and let that reflect in your work as well.
„Perfection is just a high-end, haute couture version of fear.”
This is also so very true. We hide behind perfection, as we are afraid to make a mistake. We’re afraid of failure. But failure is part of the game. There won’t be any success without failure. So let go of both the pursuit of perfection and irrational fear.
„Pursue whatever fascinates you and brings you to life. Create whatever you want to create – and let it be stupendously imperfect, because it’s exceedingly likely that nobody will ever notice.”
„Do what you love to do, and do it with both seriousness and lightness.”
This means that while seeing it through and constantly working on it, makes sure that it gives you joy and that it makes you happy. A healthy balance will let you digest that shit sandwich much better.
„You are worthy, dear one, regardless of the outcome.”
Yes, you are worthy. It doesn’t matter where your endeavor leads you. It doesn’t matter if it’s a success or failure. It doesn’t matter if you’ll abandon it at one point to move on to an even bigger dream. You are worthy and you will grow, learn and see opportunity no matter the outcome.
„What do you love even more than you love your own ego?”
This is what I call unconditional love.
I do encourage you to read this book if you love creativity as much as I do.
