Sometimes, getting up in the mornings is dreadful. At least that is the case for me sometimes. I’m constantly working on changing that though. Why you may ask? Because I love to wake up on my own terms in the mornings, fresh and energized, preferably as early as possible. I like to have time in the morning to spend with my journal to write down things that I am grateful for. My morning routine sets me up for success during the the day ahead.
You don’t want to be the person that hits snooze 10 times before getting up, then fall out of bed and into your clothes, starting your day in a rush, without a plan or reflection. Instead, start your day mindfully. This will help you to feel better, prepared, and you will more likely to go through and finish your day in a happy mood.
- Stay away from your mobile
No checking emails or social channels when you get up in the morning. This is time that you have entirely to yourself to nourish your body, heart and mind. So make this time a priority and ban possible distractions.
- Listen to musicBefore getting into the shower, while stretching or even while you’re journaling and reading, put on some music. Starting your day with upbeat and fun music will not only help you wake up, but it will also fill you with positive energy. Music in general makes you feel good, it improves your mood and studies have also shown that it increases motivation, performance and supports you in sleeping better at night.
I know, this one sounds like a no-brainer, but I am still struggling to implement that into my mornings sometimes. However, your body awakens dehydrated, which is why it is so important to drink first thing. And also make sure to keep sufficiently hydrated throughout the day to keep your energy levels up and allow your body to flush toxins out of your system. Say no to nasty headaches. They will stay away as long as you keep yourself hydrated.
- Stretch it!
I’m the first person to say „I understand how difficult this is“ when it comes to incorporating exercise into your morning routine. However stretching is not really exercise and it feels so so good. I do some stretching and strengthening for my back in the mornings, as I usually work and sit at a desk throughout the day. Figure out what works for you. Studies have shown that consistent stretching in the morning can increase flexibility, improve your circulation and posture and can reduce stress levels throughout the day.
- Reading & journaling instead of meditation
Yes, I’m saying that reading and journaling have the same benefits as meditation. Studies have shown that the time you spend reflecting and journaling as well as the time you spend reading a book or article puts you in a state of meditation. Though it’s never wrong to take a couple of deep breaths in the morning when getting up, taking some time to read a chapter in the book you are currently reading or taking some time to write things down that you are grateful for, will set you up for a successful day.
- Look at your to do list for the day
What is the one thing you want to accomplish today? Multitasking is a myth. So I say focus on one big rock per day. Make that big rock digestible by looking at the smaller steps you need to do to achieve this. While you’re doing that, make sure to plan buffer times throughout your day for unexpected and urgent requests coming your way or getting some downtime for yourself. Also, start with your least favorite thing and get that out of your way. It will stop procrastination and the day will feel so good going from hard to easier. Last but not least, planning your day with intention will enable you to be more productive and actually get stuff done.
- Do something you love to do
Spend some time in the morning with whatever it is that you really enjoy doing. What makes you truly happy while doing it? What are you passionate about? Take half an hour each morning to do exactly that and I promise, it will help you start your day that much more grateful and happy.
Your turn: Let me know what your morning routine looks like, I’d love to hear about it!
